Casino (Movie Review)
Whether it’s a real-life casino or an online one, gambling can be a great form of mental exercise. Besides helping you relieve stress and anxiety, it also improves your concentration and cognitive ability. However, it is important to remember that gambling can become a problem if you are not careful. That’s why it’s important to set a budget before you enter the casino. You should never bet more than you can afford to lose, or else you will risk a lot of money.
Few films delve into the realms of corruption and betrayal as successfully as Casino, which is a must-see for fans of Martin Scorsese and his ilk. While Goodfellas was ground-level and told the story of NYC blue-collar gangsters, this film focuses on the guys who controlled those guys – and their spectacular falls from power due to lust, greed, and hubris.
Robert De Niro delivers a masterful performance as the mob-backed casino owner Sam “Ace” Rothstein, who becomes addicted to Vegas hustler Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone). Joe Pesci is equally impressive as his mobster rival Nicky Santoro. The film’s hellacious violence – including a popped eyeball and a brutal baseball bat beating – had to be trimmed down for an NC-17 rating, but it remains shockingly effective.
Casino is a complex, multilayered masterpiece that may not get the acclaim it deserves. It is a fascinating film that should be seen by fans of all genres. While there are no good guys in this tale of avarice, treachery and violence, you cannot help but feel sympathy for the characters as they get their just desserts.
