Casino – A Movie Review

The word casino is most often used in the context of a gambling establishment where people pay to gamble on various games of chance. Many of these games involve some element of skill, but most are pure chance. Casinos also offer food and drinks and entertainment to attract players and encourage them to spend more money on gambling. The more money a player spends in a casino, the more profit the casino makes.

Most casinos have security measures in place to prevent cheating and stealing. These may include cameras, guards, and rules governing the behavior of patrons. Given the large amounts of cash handled by casinos, it is also possible for patrons and staff to be tempted to steal or cheat. This can happen both in collusion with each other or independently.

A casino is a place where gambling takes place, usually with a high house edge and low variance. To ensure their profitability, casinos need to know the house edge for every game they offer and keep track of variance. This requires the services of professional mathematicians and computer programmers called gaming mathematicians and analysts.

Aside from the obvious violence, Casino is a compelling look at Las Vegas and the power of huge gambling corporations. De Niro and Sharon Stone both deliver excellent performances, but the real standout is Joe Pesci as mobster Santoro. He oozes menace and is the perfect foil for Stone’s blonde hustler Ginger McKenna. In the end, no one really comes out looking good in this movie of greed and corruption, but everyone gets their comeuppance in the form of punishment or redemption.
